The first maternity photograph that I saw was the cover of Vanity Fair in 1991, Demi Moore nude photographed by Annie Leibovitz. At the time I was 19 and had NEVER seen a professional portrait of a pregnant woman. I was not alone, the country debated the cover, was Demi immodest, was the cover appropriate? There was no argument that she was absolutely gorgeous in the iconic image but people wondered if it was okay for a pregnant woman to show.

Lots of women in my family got pregnant and had babies. My mom had 3 cousins that had 6 kids in a matter of a few years around the same time as Demi and they all did their very best to hide their pregnancies in photos. I can't understand why, they were all happily married (still are) and thrilled to be having babies, there was no shame in the occurrence and yet the event was not to be remembered in pictures.
Before then it seemed to me as though pregnant women covered up more, and even though some were proud of their belly nobody hired professional photographers to document it. Maternity photography was not even packaged in family portraiture services back then. That Vanity Fair cover changed everything and less than 10 years later maternity photography emerged as the next event in the family album after the wedding pictures.
My first maternity session was in Chicago in 2007 and I've seen how the trend has grown tremendously since I started doing them too. I think it's truly wonderful to embrace this time and the beautiful shape of a woman with child.
This is the first child for Gretchen and Lucky, they are young parents. They were still in diapers when the photograph of Demi appeared, and probably not aware that their decision to schedule a maternity session was the result of a photo shoot that Vanity Fair, Demi and Annie scheduled 23 years ago.
Session at Shipwrecks Beach, Po'ipu, Kaua'i
