Causes for animals are my primary focus when donating time and services. I love animals, particularly dogs, and I love them because I believe in their profound positive effect on mankind. Healing Horses Kauai is an example of how animals can serve humans in ways that many of us may not have imagined possible. The mission statement of this non-profit is to enrich the lives of people using equine-assisted activities and therapies to improve physical, mental, social and emotional well-being.
This organization is not for animals, it is based on animals helping and healing people, but for me it is also a great testament to the power that animals have to help us through love and the sensitive attention, care and companionship they provide. Director Heather Phelps asked me to come out and photograph a class in Kapa'a and I was both curious and excited to check out her horses. What I did not expect was the profound effect these gentlest of creatures had on the children and adults that came in for the class. I saw shyness replaced by confidence and anxiety lost to smiles and laughter from the riders as they greeted, groomed and rode the horses and ponies. There were games and volunteers were on hand at every turn to insure the safety and security of the riders.
Healing Horses Kauai helps riders of all abilities strengthen their mind, body and spirits with the use of horses and equine assisted activities and therapies. We are lucky to have this fantastic program here and I would highly recommend this to visitors for a family activity.
